Letter 47 (106). To Abbot
Upon learning that you, beloved, was
condemned and scourged for the sake
of Christ, I rejoice and rejoice with
you. For it is joy and merriment, not
the joy of the world, which is not
joyful, only seems to be such, and in
fact is not such, because it is fleeting,
impermanent, and ending with death is produced, but joy is according to God; this and she alone is constant joy, and the end of her eternal life. Therefore, I justly rejoice and rejoice with you honorable father. And what, they say, a hundredfold blows, like rain (poured on you), and cruelly tormented the body, this is still a great joy. Not without suffering, I transferred/endure the knowledge of this and in absentia. However, glory to God who glorified you. To be beaten on the spine from the ungodly is your immortal glory, your sacred suffering, the affirmation of those same confessors, the encouragement of the Orthodox, the martyrdom of heretics, the building up of the Church of God. Stone is sacredly lying on the ground, as it is said about rock (Zech. 9, 16). What is this for? For the spread of piety, for the approval of the Church. One from all – and you, by Holy Spirit compared and connected with the Cornerstone. Remember, saint, and us sinful in prayers of our own, so that we don’t fall away from this building, but somewhere we can fit at least in the form of a stone, by the grace and by humanity of the goodness of our God.

Epistola 47(106). Către Stareţ/ Egumen
La aflarea că tu, iubite, ai fost condamnat și bătut de dragul Lui Hristos, mă bucur și mă bucur cu
tine. Căci este bucurie și vrednicie, nu
bucuria lumii, care nu este bucurie, numai pare a fi așa, și în fapt nu este așa, pentru că este trecătoare, nu dainuie și se termină cu moartea care o produce, dar bucuria este conformă Lui Dumnezău; aceasta și ea singură este o bucurie constantă și sfârșitul ei viața veşnică. Prin urmare, doar mă bucur și mă bucur cu tine cinstit tată. Și ce, spun ei, de o sută de ori mai multe lovituri, precum ploaia (turnată pe tine) și chinuit cu cruzime trupul, aceasta este încă o mare bucurie. Nu fără sufărinţă, am suferit [cu rabdare şi eu Theodor din] cunoașterea acestui lucru[chiar] și în lipsă. Totuși, slavă Lui Dumnezău Care te-a slăvit pe tine. A fi bătut pe coloana vertebrală de la cei fără de Dumnezău este slava ta nemuritoare, a ta svântă suferința, afirmare a acelorași mărturisitori, încurajarea Orthodocșilor, chinurile [de la] ereticilor, zidirea Bisericii lui Dumnezău. Piatra svântă stă întinsă/să tăvăleşte pe pământ, așa cum este spus despre Piatră (Zah. 9, 16). Pentru ce este aceasta? Pentru răspândirea bunei-cinstiri, pentru aprobarea Bisericii. Unul din toate – și tu, prin Duhul Svânt comparat și legat cu Piatra din capul unghiului.
Amintiți-vă, svânte, și noi păcătoșii în ale noastre rugăciuni, astfel încât noi să nu cădem departe din/de la această clădire, dar undeva unde să ne putem încadra/potrivim/fixa cel puțin sub formă de piatră, prin har și prin omenitatea bunătății Dumnezăului nostru.
